College Basketball: Bears give Byrne first victory
JEFFERSON, Pa. -- Junior Branden Rushton scored with two seconds left in overtime to lead the Ohio Northern men's basketball team to a 76-74 victory over Hood (Md.) in the 2012-13 season opener Saturday night.

The victory was the first for ONU's first-year head coach Kevin Byrne.

The Polar Bears advance to the finals of the Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) Classic aat 3 p.m. today against either Washington & Jefferson or Penn State-Beaver.

Rushton led four ONU players in double figures with 21 points. Junior Dominique Royal scored 16 points, junior Jared Horstman 13 and sophomore Lucan Pennington 10.

Justin Stone had a game-high 23 points and Cameron Cook added 18 points for the Blazers (0-1).

DeBord leads BU women

BLUFFTON -- Behind the play of Rachel DeBord the Bluffton University women's basketball team won the Bluffton Tip-Off Tournament Saturday, defeating Hiram 55-44 on Copeland Court in the Sommer Center.

DeBord, a sophomore, was named the tournament MVP after turning in a 13-point, 4-assist and 3-rebound performance in the title game.

Bluffton men fall, 58-56

CLEVELAND -- Johns Hopkins University used an 11-0 late-game run to post a come-from-behind 58-56 victory Saturday over the Bluffton University men's basketball team in the consolation game of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament hosted by Case Western University.

The Beavers put four in double figures, led by Tyler Neal's career-high 15 points. Josh Fisher chipped in 13 and Will Pope and Josh Johnson added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Pope was named to the all-tournament team after leading Bluffton with 25 points and 14 rebounds over the weekend.
