Pigskin Picks
Being a beat writer might end up being a beat down for Dave Hanneman.

Hanneman's primary beat is Findlay High School, a gig he inherited upon Dave Egbert's untimely passing in 1990.

Closely following one team has certain advantages, like a better understanding of the individual players and their strengths and weaknesses, or a closer rapport with the coaches and staff.

There comes a time, though, when you just might have to question a beat writer's sanity.

And this appears to be one of those times.

When Hanneman and Jamie Baker turned in their Pigskin Picks this week, they disagreed on the outcome of two games. One, Hopewell-Loudon's game at Fremont St. Joseph, is understandable. On paper, that seems like a pretty even matchup.

It's the other pick that has us scratching our collective noggins. You see, in a big Three Rivers Athletic Conference matchup, Hanneman is picking Findlay, a team averaging 52.3 points a game, over unbeaten and No. 6-ranked Toledo Whitmer, a defensive juggernaut that has allowed only 29 points in six games.

Oh, well, Hanneman must have his reasons. Maybe he's hoping to continue a recent hot streak that has seen the grizzled veteran, four games down two weeks ago, pull within a game of Baker in the overall standings.

With a 16-2 record last week, Hanneman upped his season total to 85-16. Baker is 86-15, but looking to pad his lead if a certain beat writer gets a beat down.

Hanneman's Picks

Findlay over TOLEDO WHITMER -- Whitmer is a lot like Central Catholic, and after what TCC did to FHS, absolutely nobody thinks the Trojans have a chance this week. Hey, there's always a chance.

Leipsic over ARCADIA -- Vikings haven't allowed more than one TD in a game since their season opener.

Liberty-Benton over HARDIN NORTHERN -- Eagles will head home sweet home with a 6-1 record after playing six of their first seven games on the road.

McComb over ARLINGTON -- Everybody thought it would be the "Touchdown Jerry Brown" show, but the Panthers have developed a lot of offensive balance.

Van Buren over PANDORA-GILBOA -- I couldn't determine a favorite, so I flipped a coin.

CORY-RAWSON over Vanlue -- Hornets end four-game skid at Wildcats' expense.

FREMONT ST. JOSEPH over Hopewell-Loudon -- Look for St. Joe QB Zach Yeckley to put it up early and often.

CAREY over Lakota -- Stretch run starts for Blue Devils.

TIFFIN CALVERT over North Baltimore -- Tigers hoping to catch Calvert looking ahead to St. Joe, but I don't think it will happen.

EASTWOOD over Fostoria Senior -- Eagles started 0-3, but they been soaring since.

Genoa over ELMWOOD -- Genoa is 6-0 and more explosive than the 2-4 Lake team that put up 54 points on the Royals.

Galion over RIVERDALE -- Galion has been rolling since a season-opening 14-7 loss to a pretty good Mansfield Senior team.

WYNFORD over Upper Sandusky -- I was tempted to take the Rams in an upset, but couldn't pull the trigger.

SPENCERVILLE over Bluffton -- Spencerville gave 6-0 LCC all the T-Birds could handle last week; Bluffton needed a late score to edge 0-6 Allen East.

DELPHOS JEFFERSON over Columbus Grove -- Bulldogs are on the road for the third straight game against a strong Jefferson group.

ADA over Convoy Crestview -- Crestview has been up and down. Ada has been steady as a rock.

Patrick Henry over BRYAN -- I picked against the Patriots once this year, got burned, and swore I'd never do it again.

OTTAWA-GLANDORF over Elida -- Kenton crushed Elida and O-G crushed Kenton. The Titans better not be overconfident, though, or it won't be a happy homecoming in God's country.

Baker's Picks

TOLEDO WHITMER over Findlay -- I'd love to see the Trojans get the win and the computer points, but Whitmer is just looking too tough.

Leipsic over ARCADIA -- Time for the Vikings to tune it up.

Liberty-Benton over HARDIN NORTHERN -- Survive this one and play on Polar Bears.

McComb over ARLINGTON -- Red Devils get another chance to prove me wrong yet again.

Van Buren over PANDORA-GILBOA -- Which Van Buren or P-G team is going to show up? Winner finishes above .500.

CORY-RAWSON over Vanlue -- Gotta believe there will be some angry Hornets at Spike Berry Field after last week's lopsided loss and they'll make Vanlue pay.

Hopewell-Loudon over FREMONT ST. JOSEPH -- I'm figuring the MAL title still won't be decided until Week 10.

CAREY over Lakota -- Carey has enough offense, just enough, to knock off the Raiders.

TIFFIN CALVERT over North Baltimore -- Senecas need to keep winning to stay in the playoff hunt.

EASTWOOD over Fostoria Senior -- After rolling snake eyes on Fostoria last week, I'm not picking the Redmen again.

Genoa over ELMWOOD -- Next year, or the year after, but not this year for the Royals.

Galion over RIVERDALE -- Got a lot of respect for coach Kloepfer, but it's too big a mountain to climb.

WYNFORD over Upper Sandusky -- Upper beat Ontario. Ontario beat Wynford ... still not sure the Rams beat the Royals.

SPENCERVILLE over Bluffton -- Bearcats took LCC to the limit and that's enough for me.

DELPHOS JEFFERSON over Columbus Grove -- 'Cats over 'Dogs.

ADA over Convoy Crestview -- Next pick please.

Patrick Henry over BRYAN -- A lot on the line and I'll always put my money on coach Inselmann and his staff.

OTTAWA-GLANDORF over Elida -- Could be a tough one, but always take the Titans at home.
