TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- After giving up a 31-13 lead the Bluffton University football team persevered through three overtimes and defeated Rose-Hulman 37-34 Saturday in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game.
The Beavers, now 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the HCAC, jumped out to leads of 14-0 and 31-13. But Rose-Hulman (2-4, 2-2) kept surging back and eventually tied the score at 34 on Danya Francis' 1-yard run and Mitch Snyder's two-point conversion pass to Shane Boschert with 9:16 left.
Bluffton kicker Austin Sweeney had a chance to win the game with 15 seconds remaining but his 37-yard field goal attempt missed wide right.
In the first two overtime periods Sweeney missed field goal attempts of 37 and 35 yards. However, Rose-Hulman's kicker Craig Larew also missed kicks from 34 and 37 yards.
In the third overtime, Larew's chance from 20 yards was no good. On Bluffton's possession, the Beavers advanced the ball to the 5-yard line before Sweeney won the game at long last with a 21-yard boot.
Rose-Hulman outgained Bluffton 572-498, but converted just two field goals and two touchdowns in eight red zone opportunities.
