TIFFIN -- Few golfers handled Thursday's blustery conditions at the Division I district boys tournament better than Findlay High School's Mason McCool.
McCool's 80 was the best score of the day for the Trojans as he and his teammates earned a trip to next week's OHSAA state tournament by finishing second at Mohawk Country Club.
Toledo St. Francis won the tournament with 328 strokes. Findlay picked up the final state qualifying spot with a 338, edging out Sylvania Northview (341) for second place.
McCool, Findlay's No. 3 man, could not have dealt with the cold and windy weather conditions much better.
He was third in the 60-player field, finishing behind only Clyde's Garrett Rupert (78) and Sylvania Northview's Adam Graef (79) who earned the two individual state tournament berths that were awarded.
"I just stayed focused on each shot. I didn't worry about my last shot. I was thinking about the next one," McCool said. "I knew the course was going to be tough today with the wind and I figured the scores were going to be high.
"It's all about the team getting to state. I didn't care what I shot as long as we advanced."
Findlay's No. 4 golfer Earl Streacker was next with an 84.
Eli Stacy (86) and Spencer Shoemaker (88) completed the scoring.
Teammate Trevor St. Jean finished with a 90.
Normally, the Trojans would come in with three or four sub-80 rounds. But this was far from a normal day.
"Today was a gut-check. The course was extremely difficult," said Findlay High School coach Bob Soellner.
"Our kids have played some of the toughest courses in the state and they'll tell you that today that this course was as tough as any they played all year.
"This 338 wasn't the score we were looking for. But you know what, it doesn't matter because we're moving on."
