Jess Janota (16), Alexa Turk (11) and Laura Brzozowski (8) combined for 35 kills to power Gilmour Academy (22-6) to a spot opposite Versailles (26-2) in today's 3 p.m. state championship. Versailles ousted Upper Sandusky 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 in Friday's other Division III semifinal.
Amanda Lowery had nine kills for Ridgewood (26-2).
KETTERING ALTER 3
DAYTON -- All-Ohioans Maddie Bazelak, Natalie Seiler and Jocelyn Meyer combined for 38 kills and No. 2 -ranked Kettering Alter got stronger as the match went on in beating No. 4-ranked Dover 52-23, 25-20, 25-15 in the Division II state semifinals.
Bazelak, a first-team all-Ohioan, had 13 kills. Seiler and Meyer, both third-team selections, had 17 and eight kills, respectively, as Kettering Alter (24-3) advanced to face Parma Padua (28-1) at 5 p.m. today for the Division II state title.
Moriah Monaco had 12 kills, Taylor Mathews had 21 assists and Rachel Foltz had 17 digs for Dover (27-1).
PARMA PADUA 3
DAYTON -- Emily Marcinowski was 48 for 52 spiking and hammered 22 kills to power Parma Padua past defending state champion Beaumont, 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 25-18 in the other Division II encounter.
Marcinowski also had 21 digs for Parma Padua. Katie Stansbury (36-41 spiking) added 15 kills and Gina Kilner had 48 assists in helping the Bruins (27-1) get to today's final.
UF women beat Walsh
NORTH CANTON -- The University of Findlay volleyball team remained in contention for a division crown after defeating Walsh University 25-23, 28-30, 25-9, 25-22 Friday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
The win marks the Oilers' (18-9, 9-6 GLIAC) sixth straight victory and the team trails Ashland (20-6, 12-3) in the division race.
Amanda Calhoun led the Oilers with 39 assists, seven kills, 11 digs and five blocks. Brittany Hall recorded a team-high 21 digs to go along with seven assists.
The Oilers play at Malone University at 1 p.m. today.
ONU men rocked
KENT -- Kent State held Ohio Northern to 29 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers in an 84-48 exhibition win Friday over the Polar Bears.
Derek Jackson had 18 points and Darren Goodson added 11 for Kent State.
Dominique Royal had nine points before fouling out to lead ONU, which hit just 15 of 51 field goal attempts.
ONU opens the regular season Nov. 22 at Buffalo State.
